A FINELY CARVED BAMBOO BRUSHPOT, SIGNED ZHOU ZIYAN
18th century, cylindrical brush pot with deep relief carving standing on three semi-circular feet, decorated in a continuous scene from the poem 'Former Ode on the Red Cliffs' by Xu Shi, dated 1082. Seven figures in a boat, under an overhanging pine tree, the tree growing from beside an inscribed cliff face, the inscription reading, 'Touring The Red Cliff at Night, Qianlong Jia Wu, by Zhiyan'. The figures include three seated at a kang table, at the bow are two cooking over a fanned flame, and to the rear are a man and woman stern sculling through naturalistic ripples. The poem describes a trip Xu Shi took with his friends along the Yangtze touring the site of The Battle of Red Cliffs, as described in The Romance of The Three Kingdoms
