Additional Information
Details of a book "Paper Joss - Deity Worship through Folk Prints" by Wang Shuchun , published in Beijing in 1992 . These images are characterized by the unique style of Chinese woodcut . Production centers were all over China .Prints varied regionally in terms of images depicted, composition and colour application , as well as carving the woodbloks and printing techniques. Gods' appearance and clothing looked very similar to those of the local people where the prints were made . The majority of the print workshops were set up during the mid-to late Qing Dinasty . With the Revolution of 1911 and the creation of the Republic of China , superstitious paper joss fell out of favour .However the tradition was kept alive by the practice of celebrating Lunar New Year , replacing Door Gods and Kitchen Gods . In 1983 the China Folk Customs Association was established boasting the studies of this popular art form .
