Additional Information
Note: Jodocus Hondius the Elder (1563-1612) was a Flemish engraver and cartographer. In 1604 he purchased the plates of Gerard Mercator's Atlas, republishing his work with additional maps he produced. Hondius's new edition was a great success. The maps have since become known as the "Mercator/Hondius series". The India Orientalis map was first used in its larger format in 1606, and it is considered one of the finest early one of the region. It was of the 36 new maps engraved by Hondius. In the smaller edition "Atlas Minor" the decorative details (a large sea monster and a junk in the Bay of Bengal) are missing. Hondius the Elder died at only 48 years of age and his son Jodocus II and Henricus took over the business, joined in 1633 by Johannes Janssonius, a Dutch cartographer who had married their aunt. Their production is sometimes called the "Mercator/Hondius/Janssonius" series because of Janssonius's later contributions.
